Scottish Neonatal Transport Service

The Scottish Neonatal Transport Service exists to transfer neonatal patients to an appropriate level of care.  It is planned nationally and delivered in three geographical regions by four teams, with cross cover between the regions. The North of Scotland Planning Group performance manages this service on behalf of NHS Scotland.

The service will transfer in excess of 1500 babies per year, mostly in dedicated ambulances specified for this purpose, or in an air ambulance, which might be either a fixed wing aircraft or a helicopter. 34% of transfers are emergency transfers, 54% are out of hours and 20% of babies are ventilated during transfer. Whilst the majority of transfers are within Scotland, the teams are often called upon to transfer babies to and from other parts of the UK.
